Update Your ESTA Application

Comprehensive guide to updating permitted details on your existing approved ESTA authorization.

Travel plans evolve, and the ESTA system is designed to accommodate certain changes without requiring travelers to submit an entirely new application. Whether you have changed your accommodation, updated your contact details, or need to adjust your employer information, understanding the modification process ensures your travel authorization remains accurate and up to date.

This page provides a detailed overview of what can and cannot be modified on an approved ESTA, how the modification process works, and best practices for keeping your travel authorization current.

What Can Be Modified on an Approved ESTA?

Once your ESTA has been approved, the authorization system allows updates to certain non-critical fields — specifically, information that may change between the time of application and your actual travel date. These modifiable fields are designed to accommodate the natural evolution of travel plans without compromising the security integrity of your authorization.

Fields You Can Update

The following information on your approved ESTA can be modified at any time during the validity period of your authorization:

  • Email Address: If you have changed your email address since submitting your original application, you can update it to ensure you continue receiving important communications and status notifications.
  • Telephone Number: Update your contact phone number to reflect your current or travel-specific number, ensuring authorities can reach you if necessary.
  • U.S. Point of Contact: If your contact person in the United States has changed — whether due to updated business arrangements or revised personal plans — you can update this information.
  • U.S. Accommodation Address: Changed your hotel, Airbnb, or the address where you plan to stay? This field can be updated to reflect your current accommodation plans.
  • Employer Name and Contact Details: If you have changed employers or your employer's contact information has been updated, you can Update these details on your existing ESTA.
  • City of Embarkation: If the city from which you will board your carrier to the United States has changed, this field can be updated accordingly.

Information That Cannot Be Modified

Certain fields on your ESTA are considered core identity and eligibility information. Changes to any of the following fields require a completely new ESTA application, as they fundamentally alter the basis of your authorization:

  • Full Legal Name: Any changes to your first name, middle name, or last name — including corrections of spelling errors — require a new application.
  • Gender: Your gender designation cannot be changed on an existing ESTA.
  • Country of Citizenship: If your citizenship status has changed, a new application reflecting your current nationality is required.
  • Passport Number or Country of Issuance: Since your ESTA is electronically linked to your specific passport, any change in passport details requires a new application.
  • Date of Birth: This core identifying information cannot be modified on an existing authorization.
  • Eligibility Question Responses: If any of your answers to the eligibility questions have changed, you must submit a new ESTA application reflecting your current circumstances.

When Should You Update Your ESTA?

We recommend reviewing and, if necessary, updating your ESTA before each trip to the United States. Even if your authorization is still valid, keeping the information current — particularly your U.S. accommodation address and contact details — can help facilitate a smoother entry process at the U.S. border.

Common scenarios that warrant a modification include:

  • Booking a different hotel or accommodation after your initial application
  • Changing your travel itinerary to depart from a different city
  • Updating your phone number before international travel
  • Starting a new job and needing to update employer information
  • Your U.S. point of contact has changed since your last visit

How the Modification Process Works

Updating your ESTA is a straightforward process that can be completed in just a few minutes. To access your existing authorization for modification, you will need your original application reference number and the email address used during the initial application. Once your application is retrieved, the modifiable fields will be available for editing.

All modifications take effect immediately upon saving. There is no additional processing period or re-authorization required for changes to modifiable fields. Your ESTA remains valid with its original approval date and expiration date — modifications do not reset the two-year validity period.

It is important to note that each modification is logged within the system. We recommend only making changes that genuinely reflect updates to your travel plans or personal information, and ensuring that all modified information is accurate and truthful.

Important Considerations

Before updating your ESTA, there are several important points to keep in mind:

  • Accuracy is Essential: All modified information must be accurate and truthful. Providing false or misleading information — even during a modification — can have serious consequences for your travel eligibility.
  • New Passport Means New ESTA: If your passport has been renewed, replaced, or reissued since your original ESTA was approved, you will need to apply for a new ESTA linked to your new passport, regardless of whether your previous ESTA has expired.
  • Modifications Do Not Extend Validity: Updating your ESTA does not change its expiration date. Your authorization remains valid for two years from the original approval date or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Keep Records: After making modifications, we recommend saving or printing an updated copy of your ESTA details for your personal records.

Updation vs. New Application

Understanding the difference between updating an existing ESTA and submitting a new application is crucial for maintaining proper travel authorization. A modification updates peripheral information on your existing authorization, keeping the same reference number and validity period. A new application, on the other hand, creates an entirely new authorization with a new reference number and a fresh two-year validity period.

As a general rule, if the change involves your identity, passport, or eligibility status, a new application is required. If the change involves your travel logistics, contact information, or employment details, a modification to your existing ESTA is the appropriate approach.
